Pomsky FAQ: 20 Most Asked Questions Answered — Woefkesranch Luxembourg

Size & Appearance

1. How big does a Pomsky get?

Most Pomskies weigh between 9–18 kg (20–40 lbs) and stand 25–40 cm tall at the shoulder. Size depends on the generation (F1, F1b, F2) and the size of the parents. Mini Pomskies can be as small as 5–9 kg. Read our full Pomsky size guide for details.

2. What colours do Pomskies come in?

Pomskies come in a wide variety of colours and patterns including grey & white (husky markings), black & white, red & white, brown, cream, merle, and solid white. Eye colours range from blue, brown, amber, green to heterochromia (two different colours). See our Pomsky colours guide.

3. Do Pomskies look like small Huskies?

Many Pomskies do resemble miniature Huskies, especially F1 Pomskies (50% Husky, 50% Pomeranian). However, appearance varies — some lean more towards the Pomeranian parent with a fluffier, rounder look. No two Pomskies are identical.

4. What is an F1, F1b, or F2 Pomsky?

F1 = first generation (Husky mother × Pomeranian father). F1b = Pomsky bred back to a Pomeranian (75% Pom, 25% Husky — usually smaller). F2 = two Pomskies bred together. Each generation produces different size ranges and appearances. Full explanation in our Pomsky generations guide.

Temperament & Behaviour

5. Are Pomskies good family dogs?

Yes, Pomskies can be excellent family dogs. They are playful, affectionate, and loyal. They do best with families that have older children (6+) and an active lifestyle. Early socialisation is key. Read our complete family guide.

6. Are Pomskies easy to train?

Pomskies are intelligent but can be stubborn — a trait inherited from both parent breeds. They respond best to positive reinforcement with high-value treats. Short, consistent training sessions work better than long ones. See our Pomsky training guide.

7. Do Pomskies bark a lot?

Pomskies can be vocal dogs. They may bark, howl, or “talk” like their Husky parent. With proper training, excessive barking can be managed. They are not the quietest breed — something to consider in apartments with thin walls. More in our barking guide.

8. Can Pomskies be left alone?

Pomskies can learn to be alone for 4–6 hours with proper training. They are social dogs and can develop separation anxiety if left alone too long or too suddenly. Crate training and gradual alone-time practice from puppyhood helps enormously. See our separation anxiety guide.

9. Do Pomskies get along with other dogs and cats?

With proper socialisation, most Pomskies get along well with other dogs and can learn to coexist with cats. The key is early, positive exposure. Some Pomskies inherit a higher prey drive from the Husky side. Read our Pomsky with cats guide.

Care & Health

10. How long do Pomskies live?

The average Pomsky lifespan is 12–15 years. Smaller Pomskies tend to live slightly longer. A healthy diet, regular exercise, veterinary check-ups, and dental care all contribute to longevity.

11. Do Pomskies shed?

Yes — heavily. Pomskies have a thick double coat that sheds year-round, with two major “coat blows” in spring and autumn. Regular brushing (2–3 times per week, daily during shedding season) is essential. Full details in our shedding guide.

12. Are Pomskies hypoallergenic?

No. Pomskies are heavy shedders and produce significant dander. They are not suitable for people with moderate to severe dog allergies. Read our full allergy guide.

13. How much exercise does a Pomsky need?

Pomskies need 45–75 minutes of daily exercise — walks, play sessions, and mental stimulation. They are active dogs but not as demanding as a full Husky. A bored Pomsky will find ways to entertain itself (often destructively). See our exercise guide.

14. What health problems do Pomskies have?

Common Pomsky health concerns include hip dysplasia, eye conditions (cataracts, PRA), dental issues, patellar luxation, and skin allergies. Choosing a breeder who health-tests parent dogs significantly reduces risk. Full overview in our health guide.

15. What should I feed my Pomsky?

A high-quality, protein-rich dog food appropriate for medium-sized active breeds. Puppies need 3–4 small meals per day; adults do well on 2 meals. Avoid overfeeding — Pomskies can gain weight quickly. See our feeding guide.

Buying & Ownership

16. How much does a Pomsky cost?

Pomsky puppies typically cost between €1,500 and €4,000 depending on generation, size, coat colour, and eye colour. Blue-eyed Pomskies and mini Pomskies tend to be at the higher end. Always factor in ongoing costs (food, vet, grooming). See our Pomsky price guide.

17. Can I have a Pomsky in an apartment?

Yes, Pomskies can live in apartments provided they get enough daily exercise and mental stimulation. They are medium-sized and adaptable. Be aware they can be vocal, so check your building’s noise rules. Full guide: Pomsky apartment living.

18. Is a Pomsky good for first-time dog owners?

Pomskies can be challenging for complete beginners due to their stubbornness and grooming needs. However, a committed first-time owner who researches the breed, invests in training classes, and stays consistent can absolutely succeed.

19. Is the Pomsky a recognised breed?

The Pomsky is not recognised by major kennel clubs (major kennel clubs). It is a designer crossbreed. The International Kennel Club (IKC) has been moving toward recognition. This does not affect the quality of the dog — it simply means there is no official breed standard yet.
