Are Pomskies Hypoallergenic? The Truth About Pomsky Allergies — Woefkesranch Luxembourg

Why Pomskies Are Not Hypoallergenic

Pomskies inherit a thick double coat from both parent breeds — the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian. Both are heavy shedders, and the Pomsky is no exception.

The term “hypoallergenic” is often misunderstood. No dog breed is truly 100% allergen-free. What people call hypoallergenic breeds are dogs that produce fewer allergens — typically because they shed less hair and dander into the environment.

Pomskies are the opposite. They:

  • Have a dense double coat that sheds year-round
  • “Blow” their entire undercoat twice a year (spring and autumn), releasing massive amounts of hair and dander
  • Produce the Can f 1 protein (the primary dog allergen) in their saliva, skin, and urine — like all dogs

What Actually Causes Dog Allergies?

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not the dog’s fur that causes allergic reactions. The main culprit is a protein called Can f 1, found in:

  • Dander — microscopic flakes of dead skin that become airborne
  • Saliva — which dries on the coat and becomes airborne when the dog sheds
  • Urine — can trigger reactions during house training

Since Pomskies shed heavily, they spread more dander throughout your home than low-shedding breeds. The double coat traps and then releases dander in large quantities, especially during seasonal coat blows.

Can You Still Own a Pomsky with Mild Allergies?

If your allergies are mild, owning a Pomsky may still be possible with the right management strategies:

  • HEPA air purifiers — run them in rooms where the dog spends most time. HEPA filters capture 99.97% of particles, including dander
  • Regular grooming — brush your Pomsky outside 2–3 times per week to remove loose hair before it enters your home. During shedding season, brush daily
  • Frequent bathing — bathe your Pomsky every 4–6 weeks with a gentle, hypoallergenic dog shampoo to reduce dander
  • Allergen-free zones — keep the bedroom off-limits to create a clean sleeping environment
  • Wash hands after petting — avoid touching your face before washing hands
  • Vacuum with HEPA filter — vacuum carpets and upholstery at least twice a week
  • Hard flooring — if possible, choose hard floors over carpet, which traps dander

Important: Always spend time with a Pomsky before committing to adoption. Visit the breeder, interact with the dogs for at least an hour, and see how your body reacts. This is the only reliable way to test your tolerance.

Pomsky vs Hypoallergenic Breeds

If allergies are a serious concern, consider these alternatives — or compare with a Pomsky:

Breed Shedding Allergy-Friendly? Similar to Pomsky?
Pomsky Heavy No
Poodle / Dwarf Poodle Minimal Yes Intelligent, similar size
Maltipoo Low Yes Playful, family-friendly
Cockapoo Low Yes Active, affectionate
Labradoodle Low–Medium Often Energetic, trainable
Lagotto Romagnolo Minimal Yes Active, medium-sized

Woefkesranch breeds several of these hypoallergenic alternatives. If you love the look of a Pomsky but need a low-shedding dog, a Maltipoo or Cockapoo may be a better fit for your family.

Managing Pomsky Shedding to Reduce Allergens

If you already own a Pomsky — or your heart is set on one — here’s a grooming routine that minimises allergens in your home:

  • Weekly: Brush thoroughly 2–3 times with an undercoat rake and slicker brush (outside if possible)
  • Monthly: Professional grooming or at-home bath with anti-allergen shampoo
  • Seasonally: During spring and autumn coat blows, brush daily and consider professional deshedding treatments
  • Year-round: Supplement diet with omega-3 fish oil to promote healthy skin and reduce excessive dander production
