Cockapoo Puppy Feeding Schedule: From 8 Weeks to Adult

Getting your Cockapoo puppy’s feeding right from the very beginning sets the foundation for a lifetime of good health. Nutrition during the puppy stage has a profound impact on development — affecting bone growth, coat quality, immune function, and even behaviour. Knowing how much to feed, how often, and what to look for in a quality food makes an enormous difference.

The Importance of a Consistent Start

When your puppy first arrives home, one of the most important things you can do for their digestive health is to continue feeding the same food they have been eating with the breeder. A sudden change in diet is one of the most common causes of upset stomachs in new puppies, adding unnecessary stress to an already significant transition.

If you wish to change the food after your puppy has settled in (which we typically suggest waiting at least two weeks to do), transition gradually over seven to ten days — mixing increasing proportions of the new food with decreasing proportions of the old. This allows the digestive system to adapt without disruption.

Our bringing home your Cockapoo puppy guide includes a full section on the first days at home, including what to feed and what to have ready. Our Cockapoo puppy checklist also covers feeding equipment and first-week supplies.

Feeding Frequency by Age

Young puppies have small stomachs and cannot consume or process large quantities of food at once. Spreading daily food intake across multiple meals ensures consistent energy levels, supports digestion, and helps stabilise blood sugar — which is particularly important for smaller Cockapoo varieties.

8 to 12 Weeks: Four Meals Per Day

At eight weeks, your puppy should be eating four small meals spread evenly throughout the day — for example, at 7am, 12pm, 5pm, and 9pm. This frequent feeding schedule maintains stable energy and blood sugar levels and supports the rapid growth happening during this period. Never skip meals or allow a puppy of this age to go more than five or six hours without food during the day.

12 to 16 Weeks: Three Meals Per Day

By around twelve weeks, most Cockapoo puppies are ready to transition to three meals per day. Their stomach capacity has increased, their blood sugar regulation has improved, and a three-meal schedule becomes more manageable for owners as the puppy integrates into household routine.

4 to 6 Months: Two Meals Per Day

Between four and six months, most puppies are comfortably moved to two meals per day. This is the feeding schedule that most adult dogs thrive on and that the majority of owners find most practical to maintain long-term. Two meals, morning and evening, spaced approximately twelve hours apart, is the standard recommendation.

12 Months+: Adult Feeding

The transition from puppy food to adult food typically happens at around twelve months for Miniature and Standard Cockapoos, and can be slightly earlier (nine to twelve months) for Toy-sized individuals, who reach physical maturity faster. Some owners choose to keep their dogs on two meals throughout life; others transition to once-daily feeding for adult dogs. Both are appropriate — choose what works for your dog and household.

How Much to Feed

Exact quantities depend on your puppy’s size, growth rate, and the caloric density of the food you are feeding. Always begin with the guidelines on the food packaging and adjust based on your puppy’s body condition rather than following a fixed rule.

A puppy at a healthy weight should have a visible waist when viewed from above, ribs that can be felt easily but not seen, and a slight abdominal tuck. If ribs are very prominent or the belly looks tucked up, the puppy may need more food. If the puppy looks round or has difficulty feeling their ribs, reduce portions slightly.

Because Cockapoos come in several size variants, understanding your individual puppy’s expected adult size is important for getting portions right. Our Cockapoo size guide provides detailed information about the different size categories and what to expect at each stage of development.

Choosing the Right Puppy Food

Puppy food is specifically formulated to meet the nutritional demands of growing dogs. It has a higher protein content, different calcium-to-phosphorus ratios, and additional nutrients to support bone and brain development. Never feed an adult-formulated food to a puppy, or vice versa.

For detailed guidance on what to look for when selecting a food for your Cockapoo, our comprehensive Cockapoo food and nutrition guide covers ingredients, different food types (kibble, wet food, raw, and mixed feeding), and how to evaluate quality.

Key Things to Look For in Puppy Food

  • Named meat or fish as the first ingredient (e.g., chicken, salmon, lamb) rather than generic meat meal
  • No artificial colours, preservatives, or flavourings
  • Appropriate for your puppy’s expected adult size (small breed vs. medium breed formulas)
  • A manufacturer that uses feeding trials and has transparent quality standards
  • Good digestibility — indicated by firm, well-formed stools

Treats, Snacks, and Table Scraps

Treats are an invaluable tool for training but should not constitute more than ten percent of your puppy’s daily caloric intake. Opt for small, soft treats that can be broken into tiny pieces — the size of the reward matters far less than the frequency of reward, so smaller is always better during training sessions.

Avoid feeding table scraps. Many human foods are either too rich, too salty, or actively toxic to dogs. Foods to keep away from your Cockapoo entirely include onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, xylitol (a sweetener found in many sugar-free products), macadamia nuts, and cooked bones.

Fresh Water

Clean, fresh water should be available at all times. This is especially important for puppies fed on dry kibble, which does not contain moisture. Change the water daily and wash the bowl regularly. Adequate hydration supports kidney function, digestion, coat condition, and overall energy levels.

Feeding and Behaviour

Regular, predictable mealtimes support a stable daily routine, which in turn supports calm, settled behaviour. Feeding from a puzzle feeder or slow-feeder bowl is a great way to add mental stimulation to mealtimes, slow down fast eaters, and make the eating experience more rewarding for your dog.

Avoid vigorous exercise immediately before or after meals, particularly for larger Cockapoos — allowing at least thirty minutes before and after eating before any strenuous activity helps reduce the (admittedly rare in small dogs) risk of bloat.
